TL;DR OpenAI’s newest model is big, slow, expensive, marginally better in performance, and much worse in probably the most popular LLM use case - coding.

OpenAI has launched its latest model GPT-4.5. The company describes it as a different kind of model and does not market it as a replacement for the GPT-4o.

GPT‑4.5 is a very large and compute-intensive model, making it more expensive than and not a replacement for GPT‑4o.

GPT-4.5 is currently only available to the $200/month users.

GPT-4.5 scored significantly lower than OpenAI's simulated reasoning models (o1 and o3) on tests like AIME math competitions and GPQA science assessments.

Sam Altman has attempted to temper expectations and portray the model as something magical. It’s about the vibes.

It is the first model that feels like talking to a thoughtful person to me…a heads up: this isn't a reasoning model and won't crush benchmarks. It's a different kind of intelligence and there's a magic to it I haven't felt before.

Sam Altman

He also explained the company could not release the model for everyone because they ran “out of GPUs.”

The model has the least hallucination and the highest accuracy percentage among all OpenAI models.

GPT-4.5 costs $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens through the API, compared to GPT-4o's $2.50 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.

Back in November, I reported how the improvement in AI models might be plateauing with current training methods. The skeptics were right. As far as the unsupervised learning approach is concerned, the GPT-4.5 looks like a dead-end.

Of course, I can be wrong. The response to Claude 3.7 Sonnet has been great.

But one thing is clear: Nobody expected GPT-4.5 to be such a big disappointment. The pressure is now on OpenAI to deliver something big with GPT-5.
