Anthropic has been patiently waiting since launching the Claude Sonnet 3.5 (new) in October 2024 along with Claude Haiku. In the meantime, OpenAI launched the o* series of models, DeepSeek shook the American stock market with R1, and X AI launched Grok 3 among other notable announcements.
Anthropic has launched its latest model, Claude Sonnet 3.7, and a terminal-based coding assistant called Claude Code.
Claude Sonnet 3.7
Anthropic has understood how well-appreciated Claude Sonnet 3.5 is among programmers and they have doubled down on this with 3.7. The new model shows significant improvement in coding and frontend development.
It also has an ‘Extended Thinking’ mode for reasoning. Reasoning models have become popular since the launch of DeepSeek R1.
Sonnet 3.7 is available for all Claude users including the API. The extended thinking mode is not available for Free users.
In both standard and extended thinking modes, Claude 3.7 Sonnet has the same price as its predecessors: $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens—which includes thinking tokens.
This is much more costlier than the Gemini Flash models or the OpenAI ‘o’ models.
Sonnet 3.7 has blown away the competition on the SWE-bench Verified benchmark.

It is now the leading model on multiple other benchmarks too.

Early reviews from users have been positive.
However some users have reported that the model is quite unstable when used with Cursor IDE. This might be an issue specific to Cursor. We’ll have more clarity in the coming days.
Claude Code
With Claude Code, Anthropic has stepped into the agentic coding tools market. Claude Code is an active collaborator that can search and read code, edit files, write and run tests, commit and push code to GitHub, and use command line tools.
I absolutely hate the shaky camera effect in this video but here’s the official launch video for Claude Code.
The tool is currently at capacity. You can join the waitlist here.
A day after the launch of Claude Code, Google has launched its own free coding assistant - Gemini Code Assist.
By now, it is quite clear to all software engineers in the loop that AI-assisted coding will inevitably take over for the foreseeable future. New tools keep increasing the productivity of individuals and companies. As these tools keep getting cheaper, it becomes even more easier for individual non-technical users to create their own applications. The barrier of entry to coding is lower than ever before.
