This Founder Wants To Make Padel Better
Tiago Henriques, Founder, Padel Time
Today, I interviewed Tiago Henriques, an iOS developer who is also an avid padel player. Seeing the lack of a good tracking and scoring app for the sport, he decided to create Padel Time.
Who are you and what motivated you to be in tech?
I am Tiago Henriques, an iOS Software Engineer based in Portugal. I am passionate about building user-friendly interfaces and architecting applications from the ground up. I mostly write about iOS development, and, occasionally, other software development topics.
What are some of your previous projects?
I have always had a great interest in tech and I really want my software to have an impact on people's lives. I have started my indie dev journey for about 6 months ago and since then, I launched UP - Time to Take a Break, a macOS pomodoro app that helps you manage your time and Padel Time, a score tracker companion for padel players.
Coming to Padel Time what prompted you to build it?
Padel Time
I started to play padel with my friends from work 1 year ago. While playing, one of my friends was in charge of the scoring and I got to admit that he hates losing more than anything. We eventually started to discuss the scores of our matches because I noticed that he usually "forgot" to count the points and we would end up losing focus on the matches. I concluded that we needed to count the points somehow. I began to research and found out some apps on the store that would do the job, but most of them are paid and don't provide enough features that would convince me to invest. With that, Padel Time was born, a free padel score tracker companion.
What does Padel Time offer that the competition does not?
Alongside a seamless point counting on your Apple Watch, Padel Time tracks your every move, providing valuable insights into your progression and workout metrics.
Padel Time introduces Live Score Streaming (will be available on next week's version 1.2.0), a unique solution where you can share the excitement with your fellow players in real time, enhancing the experience for everyone involved. When your friends join your game by inserting your match session code, they will see the score update on their watch in real time. A must-have feature for non-stop Padel competitions.
What are your future goals for Padel Time?
At the moment, Padel Time is only available to iOS, but I am working to make it also compatible with Android and Wear OS devices. Additionally, I want to take Padel Time to the next step and be able to get to professional players by getting high-frequency motion data from the Apple Watch sensors. I plan to collect data from a real padel session and try to turn it into something meaningful, like how many different types of volleys I take and how strong I hit the ball.
I also intend to expand Padel Time into new markets making it available to a wider public, and really hope to close some important partnerships!
What about Android and WearOS devices, Fitbit, Pebble, etc? Must be on your plans?
At the moment, Padel Time is only available to iOS, but I am working to make it also compatible to Android and Wear OS devices.
I feel you're trying to make this big, Is it your vision to make THE app for professional matches. I know the goal might be far.
As I said, I want to take Padel Time to professional players by getting high-frequency motion data from the Apple Watch sensors. I strongly believe that if would successfully be able to integrate such data, professional players and Padel investors would be interested to be part of the team.
How many users do you have currently? How's the feedback?
The app was launched last month and it is getting its first steps. Currently, there are 250 active players worldwide and the feedback is positive. People are happy and demanding new features!
Anything else that you want to share with the world (might not be tech-related)?
Really appreciate the opportunity to be featured on such interesting newsletter! I would like to encourage you all to check out Padel Time! Any feedback or contribution to help make this app better are welcome!
