Meta finally decided to pull the trigger on something they have been experimenting with since 2023. This week, Meta released AI bot profiles on Instagram - AI accounts that have been given some personalities by the engineers at Meta. This is exactly what the dead internet theory talks about - the traffic on the internet intentionally being replaced by bots.
The dead internet theory is not a theory anymore
Meta is now managing AI profiles on Instagram

After intense backlash from almost all corners of the internet, the company has removed these profiles - for now.
Meta executive Conor Hayes shared that the vision of Meta is to have mor such profiles - “We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do.”
The chats with these (like every other AI chatbot) were full of misinformation and hallucinations.
The first question that might come to your mind - Why?
You might find answers like ‘new kinds of engagement’ or something similar with a Google search but here’s what I think.
Think of kids - they can say the stupidest things that adults consider ‘secret’ to literally anyone. For example, “Last night, mommy and daddy had a night and mommy was screaming “Don’t stop! Don’t stop!” - quite embarrassing for the parents but unfiltered truth from a child.
Why do kids say whatever they want to? Because they have no fear of being judged.
Chatting with an AI chatbot would be the same for many - no judgements; conversations about anything. This would make AI chats a goldmine for advertising - the primary source of revenue for Meta.
Ads might pop in subtly during these conversations without the human even realizing it.
With someone available to talk to all the time, the screen time of any user is expected to increase.
The future looks bleak - the ‘social’ of social media is slowly becoming a shadow.
Inevitably, Meta will be back. They just need to re-strategize. The team at Meta must be actively working, thinking how these AI profiles can be repackaged to be more acceptable by the public.
There’s no debate inside Meta if these bots are needed. The debate is only when and how do we release them?
Writer RAG tool: build production-ready RAG apps in minutes
RAG in just a few lines of code? We’ve launched a predefined RAG tool on our developer platform, making it easy to bring your data into a Knowledge Graph and interact with it with AI. With a single API call, writer LLMs will intelligently call the RAG tool to chat with your data.
Integrated into Writer’s full-stack platform, it eliminates the need for complex vendor RAG setups, making it quick to build scalable, highly accurate AI workflows just by passing a graph ID of your data as a parameter to your RAG tool.
