UBTech, a humanoid robot company from Shenzhen, China, has announced a partnership with Foxconn, the leading manufacturer of iPhones.
UBTech’s Walker S1 robot stands at 5’6’’ and weighs around 76 kg.
The robot has been specifically designed to perform various tasks, from conducting visual quality inspections to carrying parcels of different sizes. It can also reportedly tighten screws with an electric screwdriver, assemble components, and sort parts.
UBTech has trained the robots for several months for logistics operations.
For car manufacturing, there [are] thousands of tasks on our list. In areas like 3C production, [these are] totally new skills for humanoid robots to learn.
UBTech also said that it would be Foxconn’s exclusive humanoid robot partner.
The company said the partnership would not only “accelerate the wider application of humanoid robots in smart manufacturing” but also “rapidly reduce the cost of production by leveraging Foxconn’s supply chain advantages”.
The company said that it also aims to be the world’s first robot maker to achieve “commercial mass production” of humanoid robots through the Foxconn tie-up.
We can expect some more months (or even years) before we see an iPhone completely assembled by a robot but the foundations have now been laid.
