This Founder Wants You To Create Courses With Complete Control

Jonathan Geiger, Founder, LectureKit

Today, I interviewed Jonathan, the founder of LectureKit, a tool that makes building courses faster and simpler. Read on to know more about him and LectureKit.

(Also, Jonathan is a cat person but I, a dog person, still published his interview because we are better😜)

Who are you and what motivated you to step into tech?

I'm Jonathan, a 23-year-old from Israel, and I build side projects while working a full-time job at a tech startup.

I stepped into tech because my whole life I played video games, and I got into programming initially because of game dev, then I transitioned into web dev (when I discovered it).

What are some of your previous projects?

Some of my previous projects are:

A lot of apps (full-time job), I'll list a few:

And many more (70+ widgets). Some personal projects are:

Coming to LectureKit, what prompted you to build it?

LectureKit

I've initially built it only for developers because a lot of platforms like: Udemy, Thinkific, Kajabi, Teachable are super limited, you build your courses, and they host them (or provide a simple page builder) and then take a 30%+ fee on every sell.

So I wanted to build a platform where you can build & manage your courses and access them via API, this way developers can have full control over their course platform, and build custom experiences.

But in the last week, I shifted a bit and made my main target audience, course creators. Now everyone can simply create and manage courses and embed the courses to any website (Wix, Wordpress, etc) and the course will be there.

What does LectureKit offer that the competition does not?

LectureKit allows users to easily integrate courses onto their websites with minimal effort using a simple copy-paste code. Additionally, LectureKit offers access to courses via API, providing developers with complete freedom and flexibility in integrating courses into their applications (soon it will give the users the option to get paid as well).

What are your future goals for LectureKit?

  1. The future of LectureKit, I guess, is to grow it, and get people to use it and pay for it as well.

  2. to sell it - I'm currently in the process of selling LectureKit for $20,000, I have a meeting with one interested buyer, and we'll see how it goes.

But I'm fine with not selling it as well.

Any plans on what you're going to do next if you sell it successfully?

If I sell it, I’m going to my next project, currently while working in LectureKit I’m working also on http://nextupkit.com

And after that, I’ll go to the next idea.

How do you manage time between your indie work, job, and friends and family?

About time management, I work hybrid, meaning some days from work, and some from home, so it makes it easier to have more free time.

In that free time, I’m working on my projects, workout (1-hour max)

On weekends I play tennis with a friend, and overall I do a lot of sports, I think it helps with motivation.

And with my friends and family, I hand out in some evenings, I’m with my partner for 6 years next month, she’s super supportive, also my CEO and co-workers are super supportive. It helps.

Anything you want to share with the world (might not be related to tech)?

They should know that cats are the best in my opinion.
