  • Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin emphasized that if AI turns against humanity, it could lead to the extinction of the human race, leaving no survivors.

  • He advocated for a security-focused open-source movement leading AI development rather than closed and proprietary corporations and venture capital funds.

  • He urged for intentional human involvement in choosing the direction and outcomes of technological advancements.

Amazon Launches Business AI Assistant Called Q

  • Amazon Q, launched by AWS, is an AI-driven chat tool designed for businesses. It serves as an assistant that allows users to ask specific questions related to their companies, using their data.

  • The tool aims to streamline information retrieval by surfacing relevant data instead of users manually searching through numerous documents.

  • It can be accessed through various channels, including the AWS Management Console, company documentation pages, developer environments like Slack, and other third-party apps.

YouTube Is Slowing Down Load Times To Fight Ad Blockers

  • Users on Reddit and Hacker News have reported a deliberate five-second delay before video pages load on YouTube when using browsers like Mozilla's Firefox, and occasionally Chrome and Edge.

  • YouTube confirmed this delay, attributing it to efforts aimed at countering ad blockers.

  • This move reflects the importance of ads as a revenue source for YouTube creators, with the company emphasizing the vital role ads play in supporting content creators on the platform.

New Technique Can Accelerate Language Models by 300x

  • Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed a technique that significantly enhances the speed of neural networks.

  • By introducing "fast feedforward" layers (FFF) using conditional matrix multiplication (CMM), they achieved a reduction of over 99% in computations for BERT, a transformer model used in language tasks.

  • This technique can be applied to large language models (LLMs) like GPT-3, offering the potential for faster and more efficient language processing.

Cigarette Waste Can Now Be Recycled To Produce Green Fuel

  • Researchers from Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania, have developed a method to extract triacetin, a compound useful in biodiesel production, from cigarette waste.

  • This approach provides an innovative solution to two environmental issues—cigarette waste and the high cost of biodiesel production.

  • With waste collection systems already in place for cigarette butts, the proposed recycling strategy involves pyrolysis treatment at 750°C, converting cigarette waste into valuable products like char, gas, and oil.
