Google Plans To Defeat OpenAI In 2024

Image from Business Insider

  • Google is aiming to launch a significant AI model in 2024, positioning itself as a leader in generic software solutions. The company has set seven key goals, including enhancing knowledge, learning, creativity, and productivity, as well as delivering the world's most advanced, safe, and responsible AI.

  • The pressure on Google to catch up with OpenAI is evident, and the company has integrated AI into existing products to compete, including Pixel smartphones, business applications, and generative AI search.

  • Despite Google's commitment to advancing AI, recent layoffs hint at potential workforce optimizations to improve efficiency and productivity.

Amazon Plans To Charge For Alexa

  • Amazon is banking on the success of a subscription version of Alexa to generate revenue in ways that the voice assistant has struggled with in the past. An anonymous Amazon employee highlighted the importance of this subscription model, stating that "if this fails to get revenue, Alexa is in trouble."

  • The subscription-based Alexa, referred to as "Alexa Plus," was initially planned for release on June 30. However, there are reported challenges in the development of the generative AI technology, known as "Remarkable Alexa." The technology is said to be deflecting answers, giving long or inaccurate responses, and facing technical complexities, potentially delaying the launch.

  • Alexa faced financial challenges in late 2022, with reports suggesting it was on track to lose Amazon $10 billion that year. Layoffs in Amazon, including in the devices and services division, have added pressure on Alexa to become a profitable entity.

Apple Follows Android Again With AI

  • Apple is reportedly planning to integrate AI features into future iPhone versions and is actively seeking expertise in "deep learning," a crucial aspect of advanced AI systems.

  • Job postings suggest the company is recruiting talent for generative AI, and analysts predict that key details about these features could be revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

  • The company is reportedly working on its own large language models to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Google.

Disney Reveals HoloTile

  • HoloTile is introduced as a creative and elegant solution to address movement challenges in virtual reality (VR). Composed of hundreds of small, round tiles, it functions as a mini omnidirectional treadmill. The primary goal is to prevent the VR user from leaving the designated pad, allowing for more immersive and dynamic experiences.

  • HoloTile's standout feature is its ability to support multiple users independently. Users can walk in any direction on the omnidirectional floor, enhancing the immersive quality of VR experiences.

  • While HoloTile is a promising concept, it is emphasized that it is currently a research project. Questions remain regarding factors such as top speed and weight capacity.

Sam Altman Is Still Chasing Billions To Build AI Chips

  • According to Bloomberg, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is seeking to raise billions for an AI chip venture. The funds are intended to be used for developing a global network of factories for chip fabrication.

  • Nvidia has gained a virtual monopoly in the field, contributing to its valuation exceeding $1 trillion. To compete and overcome limitations, companies like OpenAI are exploring ventures into chip manufacturing. SoftBank Group and G42 are reportedly in talks to invest in Altman's project.

  • Notably, various tech giants, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, have ventured into developing their own custom AI chips. This move aims to address the challenges posed by limited chip fabrication facilities capable of producing high-end chips.
