With pretty much a final stamp from the Supreme Court pending to all but confirm the TikTok ban in the USA, American users are already migrating to what has emerged as an organically favourite alternative - RedNote aka REDNote aka RED.
The Chinese version of the app is called Xiaohongshu.
Launched in 2013, it is one of the most popular social platforms in China with over 300 million subscribers.
And now, the app is gaining prominence outside China.
In the last two days, more than 700,000 new users have joined the app. Many Americans are joining the app as an act of defiance against the ban on TikTok using the hashtag #TiktokRefugee which already has more 250 million views and 5.5 million comments.
Ironically, the looming Tiktok ban has now created some of the largest and warmest cultural interactions between the Americans and the Chinese in decades.
While the Tiktok ban looms, Americans have started using Rednote (another Chinese app) and are discovering the Chinese are also nice people just like everyone else

The app wasn’t designed for English users so some Chinese users are sharing video tutorials to welcome the new English-speaking users. New users from the US are also sharing videos requesting others to be respectful and not bring politics to the app.
Some Chinese users are already seeking help with their English homework from Americans!
I guess this is what the internet was made for.
The app is seen as China’s Instagram alternative, and it shows content to users based on their interests rather than who they follow.
ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) has also already created its own TikTok alternative called Lemon8 but experts fear that if TikTok is banned, Lemon8 might be banned too.
Fun fact (or not so fun fact): Xiaohongshu literally means “Little Red Book.” Although never mentioned explicitly, it could be a tongue-in-cheek reference to the red-covered book of quotations by Mao Zedong (the founding father of Communist China).
